So there is a big “gypsy camp” as it is called around here, that is near me in Spiro, OK. Some of my followers who live near me may know what I am talking about. I believe they may be of Romani descent, after doing a small bit of research. But that could be completely wrong, I have no idea what descent they are other than I have seen some refer to themselves as “gypsy”.

They come into my store all the time. You can tell when they come in because they have VERY distinct accents, it’s almost like a twist of a southern accent. I’ve never heard anyone else with this accent except them. That, and they come in often in those velour PINK victoria’s secret sweatsuits or in very blingy expensive clothes, which makes me think that they may have some money (of course that is not always what it means, but often they spend at least $500 in the store so I would guess they have some money). I know them more from their unique accent, not so much the clothes they are wearing.

Stereotypically (not my personal opinion), they have a bad picture painted of them around here. They are often known to be thieves around here, although the first and only time I ever personally encountered that was last night when a group of like at least 12 came in and one of the teenagers opened a package of balloons, took all but like 4, and left the package in the floor, as well as opened a huge 200 pack of balloons that was also left in the middle of the floor and let their little kid blow some up (if you’ve ever worked in retail around here you probably have heard of them because I “was warned” of “gypsies” since I worked in Bed Bath and beyond back in the day), and they often will come in big groups. I’ve never experienced anything negative with them other than that.

In fact, overall they are pretty nice people, from what i have encountered (other than the bratty kid who stole stuff, although I’m sure that’s not the first person to steal from us) but they often are very elaborate and confuse me with what all they order from us (balloon-wise). These particular people speak VERY loudly when they are shopping in the store and these family’s children often seem to have no clue as to how one should appropriately act in a store. They also usually spend at least $400 to $500 on balloons alone, plus buy most of their party supplies for us. They throw huge parties, all the time, whether for a baby shower or birthday or whatever, they come in for just about any event. They get a lot of flack for stealing and scamming but they have been pretty good to us financially, to be honest.

This is certainly not a generalization to all “gypsies” (I’m not sure if that is a derogatory term, I know they identify themselves as gypsies online and on facebook and stuff but still I definitely don’t mean it derogatory) but it is just a description of what I have encountered personally. They all have either Cooper, Harrison, Stanley, or Jeffrey last names, and there are literally like 50 with those last names that I have seen, alone. It seems like they have very big families. They all seem to be related, certainly extended family if nothing else.

After doing research on google I heard of a show called My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding from TLC which focuses on British “gypsies”, but I would really like to know more about the culture of the possibly Romani “gypsies” that live around here. And anyway that show seems to get a lot of shit because it is an inaccurate depiction of this culture/lifestyle, says some of the people of this decent in various forums. Not shocking if its on tv. But honestly, It seems like they really have a unique and interesting culture, but I also read that they are kind of secretive about it? I wonder if anyone knows anything about them. I wish there was more information about the culture here in Spiro.

Also I probably look like a huge douchebag, I hope not. I just find these people very interesting, I’ve never seen anyone around here like them before. D: I certainly do not aim to sound racist, these folks are nice just like any other customer of any other race (other than the kids but thats just kids in general); I am just interested in their lifestyle and culture because it seems a lot different from mine and from some of the other cultures around here that I already know about. I have tried to find stuff about the culture here in Spiro but I can’t find much.
